Yamaguchi Goju-Kai Karate-Do

England

New karateka (students) are always welcome to begin their training in Goju-Kai Karate with us.

For those who wish to start their karate adventure at our club please feel free to attend an appropriate class from the, be that to watch initially or to jump right in and train (please contact us beforehand however as classes are subject to change over school holidays, etc).

If prospective students or their families have any questions instructors can be approached before or after lessons, or we are happy to reply to queries via email or phone.

Classes cost between £5 & £6 per lesson, although a monthly payment scheme is available to offer discounts to those training several times a week.

Membership to the IKGA is required to grade and progress in belt ranks. Membership (member to member insurance) provides insurance and English Karate Federation membership as well.

We understand that starting a new sport or attending a new club can be daunting. However, we endeavour to make anyone involved with Goju-Kai Karate feel comfortable and welcome. To this end, the following advice and etiquette has been compiled about what to expect at one of our classes, be it the student's 1st class or their 100th:

  • Junior classes are for those up to the age of 16 years old. Though strictly speaking there is no minimum age to begin training, from experience we normally suggest training can begin around age 4 years old and above.
  • Normal sports clothing is appropriate for the first class, and training is conducted barefoot (if this is a problem for any reason plimsoles can be worn).
  • Due to close contact with others during classes, personal hygiene is important - students should have hair tied back / neat and nails trimmed.
  • Students should bow upon entering and exiting the dojo (hall) and before stepping on and off of any matted area.
  • When classes commence students should line up in grade order.
  • Respect should be paid to the Shihan / Sensei taking the class throughout the duration of it.
  • Gradings are held regularly several times a year, enabling students to progress in belt rank.
  • Students, young or old, new or experienced, should all enjoy their training and have fun
