The club in Newcastle is run by Shihan Mark Purcell 5th Dan.
Mark started training in Goju-Kai Karate in 1993 and this remains the only martial art he has dedicated himself to. In 1997 Mark found himself in the uniquely difficult position of both of his teachers being unable to continue. As a result he took it upon himself to take over the club and teach as a brown belt, rather than let it fold.
To continue progressing with his own training Mark had to travel to Essex several times a month to train with Shihan Tony, all while running his club in Newcastle.
Since then Mark has graded all the way to 5th Dan black belt and was awarded his Shihan status in 2017.
His club in Newcastle has around 100 students who regularly compete and grade, and Mark still teaches in schools and a local community association.
